ABSTRACT The objective of this work was to evaluate the growth in plant height, stem base diameter, survival rate, and ecophysiology of Acacia mangium and Mimosa caesalpiniifolia plants with and without inoculation with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (Rhizophagus clarus) in areas degraded by mining in the municipality of Itaporanga D’Ajuda, SE, Brazil. The experiment was conducted with plants grown with spacing of 3 × 3 m in areas degraded by sand and gravel mining in Itaporanga D’Ajuda, using plants of the species Acacia mangium and Mimosa caesalpiniifolia. Four treatments were used: Acacia mangium without AMF; Mimosa caesalpiniifolia without AMF; Acacia mangium with AMF; Mimosa caesalpiniifolia with AMF. Plants from each treatment were evaluated for plant height, stem base diameter, survival rate and ecophysiological parameters at 12 months after planting. The forest legume Mimosa caesalpiniifolia inoculated with mycorrhizal fungi (Rhizophagus clarus) presented the best results in plant height, survival rate, and photosynthetic efficiency, at twelve months after planting. Plants in the treatment with Acacia mangium without inoculation with mycorrhizal fungi (Rhizophagus clarus) had the largest stem base diameters and second highest plant heights. However, the lowest survival rate of the plants may have caused overestimation of the results of stem base diameter and plant height.

RESUMO O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar o crescimento em altura, diâmetro, a taxa de sobrevivência e a ecofisiologia de Acacia mangium e Mimosa caesalpiniifolia inoculadas com fungos micorrízicos arbusculares (Rhizophagus clarus) e sem inoculação em área degradada de mineração no município de Itaporanga D’Ajuda, SE. O experimento foi implantado no espaçamento de 3x3 m em uma área degradada por mineração de areia e cascalhos no município de Itaporanga D’Ajuda, SE com as espécies Acacia mangium (Acacia) e Mimosa caesalpiniifolia (Sabiá). Foram definidos quatro tratamentos: Acacia mangium sem FMA; Mimosa caesalpiniifolia sem FMA; Acacia mangium com FMA; Mimosa caesalpiniifolia com FMA. As plantas de cada tratamento foram avaliadas quanto à altura da planta, diâmetro da base do caule, taxa de sobrevivência e parâmetros ecofisiológicos aos 12 meses após o plantio, utilizando 5 plantas selecionadas ao acaso por tratamento. Doze meses após o plantio conclui-se: a leguminosa florestal Mimosa caesalpiniifolia inoculada com fungos micorrízicos Rhizophagus clarus apresentou os melhores resultados em altura, taxa de sobrevivência e eficiência fotossintética. A Acacia mangium sem inoculação com fungos micorrízicos Rhizophagus clarus teve o maior diâmetro e a segunda maior altura. Porém a menor taxa de sobrevivência pode ter superestimado os resultados de diâmetro e altura.

ABSTRACT Root biomass plays a vital role in nutrient cycling for the maintenance and functioning of different ecosystems. In this context, this study aimed to determine the stocks of elements in root biomass under different covers in the Cerrado of Tocantins, Brazil. The research was conducted in different vegetal coverings: agriculture, pasture, Eucalyptus sp., and native Cerrado forest. Root biomass was collected in six trenches, 70 x 70 cm, and a depth of 50 cm through sieving. Macro and microelement stocks were determined in root biomass. Macros and microelements showed higher average values for the native forest. With the change in vegetation cover, N, P, and S were higher in agriculture, with stocks of 1.82 Mg ha-1, 1.83 Mg ha-1, and 9.6 Mg ha-1. In a planted forest of Eucalyptus sp., macroelements K, Ca, and Mg were higher, with stock values of 16.06 Mg ha-1, 25.91 Mg ha-1, and 5.02 Mg ha-1, and microelements, B, Cu, Fe, Mn, and Zn with values of 0.05 Mg ha-1, 0.04 Mg ha-1, 5 Mg ha-1, 0.7 Mg ha-1, and 0.08 Mg ha-1 in root biomass, respectively. Thus, the planted forest of Eucalyptus sp. promoted greater stocks and cycling of elements, with greater stability of the organic material.

RESUMO As biomassas radiculares desempenham um papel importante na ciclagem de nutrientes, para manutenção e funcionamento dos diferentes ecossistemas. Diante desse contexto, o trabalho teve como objetivo determinar os estoques de elementos em biomassa radiculares sob diferentes coberturas no Cerrado em Tocantins, Brasil. A pesquisa foi conduzida em diferentes coberturas vegetais: agricultura, pastagem, Eucalyptus sp. e floresta nativa de cerrado. As biomassas radiculares foram coletadas em seis trincheiras com dimensões 70 x 70 cm, e profundidade de 50 cm através do peneiramento. Os estoques dos macros e microelementos foram determinados em biomassas radiculares. Os macros e microelementos apresentaram valores médios maiores para floresta nativa. Com a mudança de cobertura vegetal N, P, S, foram maiores em agricultura, com estoques de 1,82 Mg ha-1, 1,83 Mg ha-1 e 9,6 Mg ha-1. Em floresta plantada de Eucalyptus sp., os macroelementos K, Ca e Mg foram maiores tendo valores de estoques respectivamente de 16,06 Mg ha-1, 25,91 Mg ha-1 e 5,02 Mg ha-1 e microelementos B, Cu, Fe, Mn e Zn com valores de 0,05 Mg ha-1, 0,04 Mg ha-1, 5 Mg ha-1, 0,7 Mg ha-1 e 0,08 Mg ha-1 em biomassas radiculares. Deste modo a floresta plantada de Eucalyptus sp. promoveu maiores estoques e ciclagem de elementos, com maior estabilidade do material orgânico.

Abstract Intense soil preparation and disturbance in crops, over time, reduces the quantity and quality of soil organic matter. Given this context, this work aimed to determine soil carbon stocks and labile fractions under agroforestry system (AFS) and toposequences in an altitude marsh, Taquaritinga do Norte, Pernambuco, Brazil. The study was carried out at the Yaguara farm, and the areas studied were native forest with 4.57 ha and coffee plantation in shade with native forest with 25.59 ha. Soil samples were collected in four trenches measuring 1.5 x 1.5 x 0.60 m, with a distance of 50 meters. Soils were collected at depths of 0-20, 20-40 and 40-60 cm, followed by chemical, physical and density analyzes to determine soil carbon stocks and labile fractions. The area with shaded coffee showed higher values of soil carbon stocks at depths of 0-20 cm and 20-40 cm. At a depth of 40-60 cm, the AFS top toposequence showed the highest carbon stock with 11.73 Mg ha-1, followed by the area with native vegetation with 10.6 Mg ha-1, slope with 9.23 Mg ha-1 and pediment with 7.00 Mg ha-1. It was found that the top toposequence with shaded coffee exhibited a greater stock of labile carbon at depth 0-20 cm with a value of 1.06 Mg ha-1, followed by the bedding areas (SAF) with 0.88 Mg ha-1, native forest with 0.79 Mg ha-1 and slope with 0.67 g kg-1. However, the area of native vegetation showed the highest value of labile carbon at a depth of 40-60 cm. It was concluded that the area with shaded coffee in the top toposequence showed great capacity to increase total carbon stocks and labile carbon stocks of soil organic matter.

Resumo O intenso preparo e revolvimento do solo em cultivos, com o tempo, reduz a quantidade e a qualidade da matéria orgânica do solo. Diante desse contexto, este trabalho teve como objetivo determinar os estoques de carbono do solo e frações lábeis sob sistema agroflorestal (SAF) e topossequências em brejo de altitude, em Taquaritinga do Norte, Pernambuco, Brasil. O estudo foi desenvolvido na fazenda Yaguara, e as áreas estudadas foram mata nativa com 4,57 ha e plantio de café sombreado com mata nativa com 25,59 ha. As amostras de solos foram coletadas em quatro trincheiras 1,5 x 1,5 x 0,60 m, com distância de 50 metros. Foram coletados solos nas profundidades de 0-20, 20-40 e 40-60 cm, seguido de análises químicas, físicas e densidade para determinação dos estoques de carbono no solo e frações lábeis. A área com café sombreado apresentou maiores valores de estoques de carbono no solo nas profundidades de 0-20 cm e 20-40 cm. Na profundidade de 40-60 cm, a topossequência de topo do SAF apresentou maior estoque de carbono com 11,73 Mg ha-1, seguido da área com vegetação nativa com 10,6 Mg ha-1 , encosta com 9,23 Mg ha-1 e pedimento com 7,00 Mg ha-1. Verificou-se que a topossequência de topo com café sombreado exibiu maior estoque de carbono lábil na profundidade 0-20 cm com o valor de 1,06 Mg ha-1, sucedido das áreas de pedimento (SAF) com 0,88 Mg ha-1, mata nativa com 0,79 Mg ha-1e encosta com 0,67 Mg ha-1. No entanto, a área de vegetação nativa apresentou o maior valor de carbono lábil na profundidade de 40-60 cm. Concluiu-se que a área com café sombreado na topossequência topo mostrou grande capacidade para elevar os estoques de carbono total e estoques de carbono lábil da matéria orgânica do solo.

Resumo A dinâmica da cobertura florestal na Bacia Hidrográfica do Rio São Francisco (BHRSF) pode ser avaliada por métricas de ecologia da paisagem. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a fragmentação florestal na Bacia Hidrográfica do Rio São Francisco, Brasil, por meio de métricas de ecologia da paisagem e quantificar a cobertura florestal nas unidades de conservação federais (UCs) presentes, para os biomas Caatinga, Mata Atlântica e Cerrado nos anos de 1997, 2007 e 2017. O mapeamento dos fragmentos foi realizado considerando área e quantidade dos fragmentos florestais, divididos nas seguintes classes de tamanho: (1) pequeno (até 10 ha); (2) médio (entre 10 e 100 ha); e (3) grande (maiores que 100 ha). As métricas, área, forma e borda, foram calculadas no software Fragstats® 4.2. As métricas números de fragmentos (NP), área de classe (CA), tamanho médio dos fragmentos (MPS) e densidade de borda (ED) dos fragmentos florestais dos biomas Caatinga e Cerrado na BHRSF comprovam que a Bacia está em processo de fragmentação florestal, principalmente nos grandes fragmentos, que tiveram suas áreas reduzidas, e nos de tamanho médio, que tiveram aumento da quantidade de bordas. De forma geral, a proteção de áreas florestais nas UCs da Caatinga e Cerrado não foram eficazes em manter a cobertura florestal, haja vista o desmatamento nestas áreas protegidas em 20 anos. Medidas como pagamentos por serviços ambientais ou restauração florestal devem ser utilizadas pelo poder público e sociedade em conjunto com a criação e manutenção de áreas florestais protegidas. A Mata Atlântica foi o único bioma a apresentar aumento na cobertura florestal e redução da fragmentação florestal na BHRSF. Iniciativas como o pacto da restauração da Mata Atlântica e Lei da Mata Atlântica de 2006 podem ter favorecido esse aumento da cobertura florestal.

Abstract The dynamics of forest cover in the São Francisco River Basin (BHRSF) can be assessed by metrics of landscape ecology. The aim of this work was to evaluate the forest fragmentation of the São Francisco River Basin, Brazil, through metrics of landscape ecology, and the quantification of forest cover in federal conservation units (UCs) for the Caatinga, Atlantic Forest and Cerrado biomes in the years 1997, 2007 and 2017. The mapping of forest fragments was calculated by the area and the quantity of forest fragments that were divided into the size classes: (1) small (up to 10 ha); (2) medium (between 10 and 100 ha); and (3) large (greater than 100 ha). The metrics were calculated in the Fragstats® 4.2 software, and three groups of metrics were used: area, shape and border. The metric fragment numbers (NP), class area (CA), average fragment size (MPS) and edge density (ED) of forest fragments from the Caatinga and Cerrado biomes at BHRSF prove that the Basin is in the process of forest fragmentation mainly in the large fragments, which had their areas reduced, and in those of medium size, which had an increase in the amount of edges. In general, the protection of forest areas in the Caatinga and Cerrado UCs is not effective in maintaining the forest cover, given the deforestation that has existed in these protected areas in the last 20 years. Measures such as payments for environmental services or forest restoration must be used by the government and society in conjunction with the creation and maintenance of protected forest areas. The Atlantic Forest was the only biome to show an increase in the forest cover and a decrease in the forest fragmentation at BHRSF. Initiatives such as the Atlantic Forest Restoration Pact and the 2006 Atlantic Forest Law may have favored this increase in the forest cover.

Abstract An adequate amount of soil organic matter is considered essential for long-term sustainable agriculture, ensuring good productivity. Therefore, the present study quantified carbon and nitrogen stocks and microbiological activity in soil of three different areas: Forest-pasture System, Pasture System and preserved Caatinga - used as a reference of the experiment - located in a semi-arid region, in Watershed of Pajeú River, state of Pernambuco, Brazil. Eight trenches were opened in each system to collect soil samples at depths of 0 - 10, 20 - 30 and 50 - 60 cm, for chemical and microbiological analysis. In general, attributes of soil showed better results of land use in the following order: preserved Caatinga - Forest-pasture System - Pasture System.

Resumo A atividade microbiana se mostra bastante sensível a mudanças da cobertura, tornando-se um importante indicador de qualidade do solo. O estudo teve como objetivo avaliar as alterações nas atividades microbiológicas do solo sob as diferentes coberturas vegetais no cerrado do Tocantins. O trabalho foi desenvolvido em áreas de Eucalyptus sp., pastagem, agricultura e cerrado sensu stricto na fazenda experimental da Universidade Federal do Tocantins. As amostras de solo foram coletadas em trincheiras de 70 x 70 cm nas profundidades 0-10 e 10-20 cm, com seis repetições. As variáveis avaliadas foram: concentração e estoque de carbono na biomassa microbiana, respiração basal do solo, quociente metabólico e quociente microbiano. A análise estatística foi realizada por meio do teste de normalidade, análise de variância e comparação das médias pelo teste Tukey a 5% de significância. A área com Eucalyptus sp. com 11 anos apresentou uma atividade microbiológica do solo estável, apresentando estoques de carbono na biomassa microbiana superiores em 57,32 % aos da vegetação de mata nativa, 84,29 % ao da pastagem e 290,91 % ao da agricultura. As atividades microbiológicas do solo são afetadas pela variação da cobertura vegetal do solo, sendo eficiente como indicador de qualidade do solo.

Abstract The microbial activity is very sensitive to changes in soil cover, making it an important indicator of soil quality. The study aimed to assess changes in soil microbiological activities under different vegetation coverings in the Cerrado biome of Tocantins state. The work was developed in areas of Eucalyptus sp., Pasture, agriculture and Cerrado sensu stricto in the experimental farm of the Federal University of Tocantins. The soil samples were collected in trenches of 70 x 70 cm at depths 0-10 and 10-20 cm, with six replications. The variables evaluated were: concentration and stock in the microbial biomass carbon, basal soil respiration, metabolic quotient and microbial quotient. The statistical analysis was performed using the normality test, analysis of variance and comparison of means by the Tukey test at 5% significance. The area with Eucalyptus sp. at 11 years of age, he had a stable soil microbiological activity, showing stocks in microbial biomass carbon 57.32% higher than that native forest vegetation, 84.29% that pasture and 290.91% that agriculture. The soil microbiological activities are affected by the variation of the soil vegetation cover, being efficient as an indicator of soil quality.

Abstract Soil organic matter has great importance in chemical, physical and biological processes in soil-plant system. This study aimed to evaluate changes in carbon humic fractions of soil organic matter under different vegetation coverings in Cerrado in Tocantins, Brazil. The work was developed in Eucalyptus sp., Pasture, Agriculture and Cerrado sensu stricto areas. Soil samples were collected in dry period, October, 2018, in trenches 70 x 70 cm at depths 0-10, 10-20, 20-30, 30-40 and 40-50 cm, with six replications. The vegetation cover in Eucalyptus sp. area showed higher levels of total carbon in soil humic fraction. Respectively fulvic acid, humic acid and humin in Eucalyptus sp. area had stocks of 22.09; 2.71 and 20.01% higher than native forest, 32.04; 2.57 and 35.59% higher than pasture and 10.59; 19.19 and 7.61% higher than the agriculture area. Among the different areas evaluated, the soil of Eucalyptus sp. has great potential to increase carbon storage in soil humic fractions.

Resumo O Brasil tem extensas formações vegetais ao longo do seu território que são afetadas por ocorrências de queimadas, necessitando de um monitoramento espaço-temporal e de estudos que relacionem a sua atuação nos biomas e nas áreas protegidas do país. Sendo assim, o objetivo do presente estudo foi analisar o comportamento temporal e espacial das ocorrências de fogo de 2003 a 2017 nos biomas brasileiros: Amazônia, Caatinga, Cerrado, Mata Atlântica, Pantanal e Pampa, incluindo as incidências nas áreas de Unidades de Conservação, verificando possíveis padrões da distribuição dos focos, assim como a tendência estatística das suas ocorrências. Foram utilizados dados geoespaciais de 2003 a 2017 do satélite de referência AQUA_M-T obtido no Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas Espaciais, e das Unidades de Conservação disponibilizados pelo Ministério do Meio Ambiente. Estatisticamente, foi aplicado o algoritmo Kernel para analisar a distribuição espacial a partir da média da série temporal estudada, e o teste não paramétrico de Mann-Kendall, considerando também a sua Persistência de Longo Alcance para verificar a tendência de ocorrência. Observou-se que os biomas Amazônia e Cerrado possuem, respectivamente, os maiores focos de fogo, com o Cerrado tendo maior área queimada. Consequentemente, as Unidades de Conservação localizadas nestes biomas tiveram maior quantidade de focos detectados. A análise da tendência estatística indicou que o crescimento da ocorrência de fogo possui sazonalidade em todos os biomas, com o Pampa sendo caracterizado por uma condição natural. Portanto, o estudo permitiu identificar e quantificar, espacialmente, os maiores focos de queimadas nos Biomas brasileiros, bem como nas Unidade de Conservação em cada respectivo bioma para a série estudada, servindo como base para medidas de prevenção e controle do fogo principalmente nas Unidades de Conservação que possuem maiores ocorrências no país.

Abstract Brazil has extensive plant formations throughout its territory that are affected by burning occurrences, necessitating space-time monitoring and studies that relate its performance to the biomes and protected areas of the country. Therefore, the objective of the present study was to analyze the temporal and spatial behavior of the occurrences of fires from 2003 to 2017 in the Brazilian biomes: Amazonia, Caatinga, Cerrado, Mata Atlântica, Pantanal and Pampa, including incidences in the areas of Conservation Units, possible patterns of distribution of forest fire outbreaks, as well as the statistical trend of its occurrence. Geospatial data were used from 2003 to 2017 of the AQUA_M-T reference satellite obtained from the National Space Research Institute and from the Conservation Units provided by the Ministry of the Environment. Statistically, the Kernel algorithm was applied to analyze the spatial distribution from the mean of the time series studied, and the non-parametric Mann-Kendall test, also considering its Long Range Persistence to verify the tendency of the occurrence. It was observed that the Amazon and Cerrado biomes have, respectively, the largest fires, with the Cerrado having a larger area burned. Consequently, the Conservation Units located in these biomes had a higher amount of fires. The tendency statistical analysis indicated that the growth of the occurrence of fire has seasonality in all the biomes, with the Pampa being characterized by a natural condition. Therefore, the study allowed to quantify and to identify, spatially, the largest fires in the Brazilian Biomes, as well as in the Conservation Units in each respective biome for the studied series, serving as a basis for fire prevention and control measures, mainly in which that have the highest occurrences in the country.

RESUMO O objetivo deste estudo foi mapear e analisar uso da terra e a estrutura da paisagem florestal na Bacia Hidrográfica do Rio Ubá - RJ, através de métricas da paisagem. O mapeamento do uso da terra e dos fragmentos florestais foi realizado através de uma imagem CBERS 2B/HRC. Para o cálculo dos índices de ecologia, foi utilizado o programa FRAGSTATS 4.2®. Os fragmentos mapeados foram divididos em classes de tamanho: 1-fragmento muito pequeno, menor que 5 ha; 2 - fragmento pequeno, entre 5 e 10 ha; 3- fragmento médio, entre 10 e 100 ha e 4 - fragmento grande, maior que 100 ha. As análises quantitativas por meio de métricas da paisagem foram feitas com as métricas de classe: área, forma, área central, agregação e diversidade, sendo a área central obtida em diferentes simulações de efeito de borda (20, 40, 60, 80, 100 e 140 m). Foram mapeados 47 fragmentos florestais em toda a Bacia do Rio Ubá, representando 23,65% de cobertura florestal. Os fragmentos médios apresentaram maior número (25), seguidos pelos fragmentos de tamanho pequeno (9), muito pequeno (7) e, somente dois fragmentos grandes. A Bacia do Rio Ubá possui um predomínio de uma matriz antrópica representada por pastagem, pequeno percentual de cobertura florestal com fragmentos de tamanho médio entre 10 e 100 ha, com alto grau de fragmentação florestal da paisagem. Os fragmentos médios são a classe mais numerosa e com maior área total, constituindo a única classe de tamanho que mantém uma distância menor que 100 m entre si. Os fragmentos muito pequenos e pequenos apresentaram formatos mais regulares, porém, com maior densidade de borda. Em relação às métricas de área central, os fragmentos muito pequeno e pequeno perderam totalmente sua área central, estando completamente sob efeito de borda considerando uma distância de borda de 140 m. Uma alternativa no contexto da Bacia do Rio Ubá é a utilização dos fragmentos florestais muito pequenos e pequenos como corredores ecológicos para interligação aos fragmentos médios.

ABSTRACT This study aimed at mapping and analyzing the use of the land and the forest landscape structure in Ubá river basin - RJ state, through landscape metrics. The mapping of the land use and of the forest fragments were performed through a CBERS 2B/HRC image. To calculate the ecology indexes, the program FRAGSTATS 4.2® was used. The mapped fragments were divided by size classes: 1- very small, smaller than 5ha, 2- small fragment, between 5 and 10ha, 3- medium fragment, between 10 and 100 ha, and 4- big fragment, bigger than 100ha.The quantitative analysis through the landscape metrics were performed with the class metrics: area, shape, central area, aggregation, and diversity, obtaining the central area in different simulations of edge effects (20, 40, 60, 80, 100 and 140 m). 47 forest fragments were mapped through all Uba river basin, representing 23.65% of forest cover. The medium fragments presented the greatest number (25), followed by the small ones (9), very small ones (7), and only two big ones. Ubá river basin has a predominance of an anthropogenic matrix represented by grasslands, a small percentage of forest cover with medium fragments between 10 and 100 ha, with a high degree of forest landscape fragmentation. The medium fragments are the most numerous class with a wider total area accounting for the only size class that maintains a distance shorter than 100 m between themselves. Even though the very small fragments and the small ones presented more regular shapes, they had a greater edge density. In relation to the central area metrics, the very small and small fragments totally lost their central area, being completely under the edge effect considering an edge distance of 140 m. An alternative in the context of Ubá river basin is the use of very small and small fragments as ecological corridors for the link with the medium fragments.

RESUMO O objetivo deste trabalho foi quantificar o uso da terra e as métricas da paisagem da Bacia Hidrográfica do Rio Piauitinga, SE, a partir de imagens orbitais de alta resolução espacial. Foi utilizada uma imagem RapidEye com resolução espacial de 5 metros para mapear o uso e cobertura da terra. Foram consideradas as métricas de ecologia da paisagem ao nível de classe. Além disso, foram realizadas simulações da distância de borda nos fragmentos florestais remanescentes. A bacia apresenta uma paisagem dominada por pastagens (50,43%). A vegetação nativa é a segunda maior classe de uso (23,79%), porém está fragmentada, com numerosos fragmentos de tamanho pequeno e com grande efeito de borda. O aumento da distância de borda reduz a área central, principalmente dos fragmentos da classe muito pequeno, sendo indicado o estabelecimento de corredores ecológicos.

ABSTRACT This study aimed to quantify the land use and extract landscape metrics in the Piauitinga basin, SE, using satellite images with high spatial resolution. We used a RapidEye image with spatial resolution of five meters to map the land use and land cover. The landscape ecology metrics were calculated at the class level. In addition, simulations were performed to understand the edge effect for the remaining forest fragments. The basin presents a landscape dominated by pasture land (50.43%). Native vegetation represents the second largest class (23.79%), but is fragmented, with numerous small fragments showing a large edge effect. The increase in the edge distance reduces the central area, especially for fragments of the smallest size class, which indicates the establishment of ecological corridors.

No presente estudo, foi realizada uma análise temporal do uso e da cobertura da terra na região semiárida de Sergipe. Para tanto, foram utilizadas imagens dos satélites Landsat-5 TM e Landsat-8 OLI, adquiridas nos anos de 1992, 2003 e 2013. Utilizou-se o algoritmo da máxima verossimilhança, que possibilitou a classificação de seis classes de uso e de cobertura da terra. Para validação dos dados, foi usada uma imagem Spot-5, de alta resolução espacial, como referência de dados para as classes de uso e de cobertura escolhidas. Os resultados indicam um aumento de mais de 26% do desmatamento da vegetação nativa na área de estudo. A vegetação da Caatinga foi a mais impactada, a maioria convertida em novas pastagens. Além disso, observou-se que o aumento do desmatamento na área de estudo ocasionou também uma redução da Caatinga preservada e da regeneração florestal.

This study performed a temporal analysis of the land use and coverage in the semiarid region of Sergipe. We used Landsat-5 TM and Landsat-8 OLI satellite images acquired in 1992, 2003 and 2013. The maximum likelihood algorithm was used to detect six classes of land use and land coverage. We used a high spatial resolution Spot-5 scene as reference data to validate the assigned land use and coverage classification. Our results indicate that deforestation of native vegetation increased approximately 26% in the study area. The Caatinga vegetation was the most impacted, mostly converted to pastureland. In addition, it was observed that the deforestation increase in the study area negatively affected the preserved Caatinga secondary regrowth.

Estudos de ciclagem de nutrientes no bioma Caatinga podem contribuir para o melhor entendimento dos processos ecológicos nesse ecossistema. Dessa forma, o presente estudo buscou ampliar as informações sobre o aporte do material formador da serapilheira, sua composição química e velocidade de decomposição em uma área de Caatinga no município de Santa Luz, PI. A produção de serapilheira foi coletada mensalmente (dezembro de 2010 a novembro de 2011), utilizando-se 10 coletores. Parte do material coletado foi utilizada para análise de N, K, P, lignina e tanino. A decomposição foi avaliada utilizando litter bags. Os resultados deste estudo indicam que a redução da precipitação levou ao aumento da deposição de serapilheira, principalmente a fração folhas. O nitrogênio apresentou o maior aporte dentre os nutrientes. Os elevados teores de lignina e tanino na serapilheira da Caatinga reduzem a velocidade da decomposição da serapilheira.

Studies on nutrient cycling in the Caatinga biome can support a better understanding of the ecological processes in that ecosystem. This study aimed to improve information related to the amount of organic material for litter formation, its chemical composition and required time for decomposition in a study area located in the Caatinga biome, municipality of Santa Luz, Piaui state, Brazil. The litterfall production was monthly collected between December 2010 and November 2011 using 10 collectors. The collected material was partially used as samples for soil analysis (N, K, P, lignin and tannin). The decomposition was assessed using litter bags. Our results indicate that litter deposition increases as precipitation decreases, mainly the leaf fraction. The greatest soil nutrient content was Nitrogen. It seems that the high concentrations of lignin and tannin in the Caatinga litter were responsible for decreasing the decomposition rate of the leaf litter.

Este trabalho objetivou determinar o efeito do plantio de eucalipto no carbono orgânico total, na biomassa microbiana e na matéria orgânica leve na região do Cerrado, no sul do Piauí. O estudo foi desenvolvido utilizando-se amostras de solos provenientes de povoamentos de Corymbia citriodora com quatro anos e Eucalyptus urophilla com cinco anos, e de uma área de cerrado preservada (testemunha). As práticas de manejo dos plantios de eucalipto promovem a oxidação da matéria orgânica leve, resultando em maior teor de carbono orgânico do solo em relação ao cerrado preservado. A biomassa microbiana do solo nos plantios de eucalipto apresentou pouca eficiência na manutenção do carbono em comparação ao cerrado preservado.

This study investigated the effect of eucalyptus plantations in the total organic carbon, microbial biomass and light organic matter from the cerrado in the south region of the State of Piaui. The study was carried out utilizing soil samples from four-year-old Corymbia citriodora and five-year-old Eucalyptus urophilla stands and a preserved cerrado area (control).The management practices of eucalyptus plantations promoted the oxidation of the light organic matter result in gin higher content of soil organic carbon in relation to the preserved cerrado area. The soil microbial biomass in eucalyptus plantations presented low efficiency in the maintenance of carbon compared to the preserved cerrado.
